seattle or let seattle beat green bay on monday and then this, the kick by baltimore that angered bill belichick so much he grabbed that ref. he got a $50,000 fine for it. rob, i want to show everybody the front of "the post." oh say can't owe see? they have a good time with the headlines. but explain what the very latest is now. that's been talk this afternoon that maybe they were going to go back under one roof and hash this out. >> yeah, thomas. after monday night's debacle, the owners and officials stayed up until 2:00 in the morning last night trying to hash this thing out. reports are coming out now this afternoon that they're very close, that they have agreed on some key issues. the big issue that's still outstanding, of course, the one that's always a problem in negotiations, money. but apparently they are getting close. and i think a lot of people now following this think that the replacement refs if not by tomorrow night which is the next scheduled game in the nfl will be out of there and the regular officials back by this weekend. nothing confirmed yet but they seem to be cl

in baltimore as they made their long awaited return to the field for the ravens game against the browns. and for once the men in stripes were the most popular guys in the stadium, at least for a bit. let's get to the actual game. no score in the first quarter. josh cribbs back to receive a punt for the browns. wow! look at this, folks. he gets popped at the 40 yard line. his helmet comes flying off. anyway, it's a loot ball. that is the least of anybody's worries. cribbs who got sandwiches between defenders lied motionless on the field for a bit. both teams gathered around him in prayer. but thankfully cribbs got up, walked off under his own power, even managed a bit of a smile. picking it up in the third quarter, browns driving into ravens territory down by six. but rookie brandon weedon throws a floater into the flap, picked off by kerry williams. takes it 65 yards the other way and give the ravens a two score lead. browns draw within six and have a chance to win it. weedon throws a hail mary to the end zone. kind of like that seattle play. but this one falls incomplete. now does look

news made that point and it's great one. the call of game in baltimore on a field goal that was very close happened to be the correct call and it happened to go for the home team. this was an incorrect call and it went for the home team. but wait until a game-ending game decided call is in dispute, even if it happens to be correct. if it's close enough to be in dispute and it somehow goes against the home team, you wonder what might happen in the stadium, gimp the fact that fan behavior is of concern, drinking in the stadium. barnyard chants. this isn't fwakt exactly the high point of civil it. you don't know what would happen. >> whaun does it look like this thing might get settled? >> not this week. i think they go into this weekend again with the replacement officials. i don't even know how to guess on this. i would think in the next few weeks, but nothing certain. >> bob costas, it's always great to see you, bob. thank you for coming on the program. >> thank you. >>> no replacement for todd akin. he said he's staying in the senate race. the question is who will help him win? some

. >> no problem. >> the refs are back tonight in baltimore. what did it come down to in the end? >> i think a couple of things. first of all, the nfl could not send replacement officials to green bay sunday. i think everybody in the league knew that. i mean, this had to get done this week. and i think at the end of the day, the officials get to retain a pension system through 2016 that 89% of corporate america doesn't have anymore. okay? and they're part-time employees. this pension was important to the officials. they get to retain it for the next five seasons. and the nfl gets to hire a taxi squad of officials that over the next few years they can replace underperforming officials. >> peter, peel back the curtain a little bit because you talked to all the principals involved here. for the first couple of weeks, did roger goodell say to himself, we're going to weather this, we're the nfl, we don't have to worry about this? >> yes. >> and did it come down to monday night? >> i think a lot of this was monday night. remember the way he thinks. he's thinking two, three, four years down the roa
